Chapter 6 - Speechless

Felicity

Dorm steps

Just before sunrise

Saturday morning

She was speechless.

Felicity had sat and stared at him with mind numbing bewilderment as he finished his descriptions for her. Then she had stood, moved aside and stared some more, as he shoved the rest of their things into the basket and strapped it to the bike. In mute shock, she was staring at this man that she’d thought she knew, trying to figure out how all of his traits and features could come together to form a person who could have done those things.

Two hundred and seventy one years was a very long time. Did that make any difference? Did it matter at all? It’s not as though it could ever be un-done. He’d had time to change, to repent, to become someone new, someone who would never repeat such horrid acts.

He was right. There was absolutely nothing she could say. She climbed onto the motorcycle and let him drive her home. When they reached the dorms and she dismounted the bike, she realized that she hadn’t even thought to put on her helmet. It was still strapped to the back. She stood and stared at it.

He turned and she actually flinched. She hadn’t meant to, but she did. He must have seen it, but he wasn’t even turning towards her. He was getting her comforter off the back. He thrust it out to her without even looking. It wasn’t done un-gently but she realized that he was trying to get rid of her as quickly as possible. From what she could see of his eyes, they looked moist and blood shot.

She awkwardly took the bundle into her arms and backed up a step for him to leave. He just sat there at first, staring at the handlebars. She realized that although he wouldn’t look at or speak to her, he was waiting to see her safely inside. He was waiting to see her climb the steps to the door with his peripheral vision. She just stood there. She wasn’t sure why, but she felt as though she wanted to force him to look at her. She needed to see his face again.

It was obvious that he almost wanted to wait her out. He didn’t want to give in and face her, but time was on her side. The dawn was coming fast and he couldn’t wait. Finally, he gave her a glance with undisguised guilt and self-loathing in his eyes.

She wasn’t ready to leave. She opened her mouth, although she’d no idea what she’d say. He didn’t give her the chance. Her revved the cycle to cover any words, and sped away. She watched his back recede until he was lost to her view.

She was still standing there a few minutes later, when she recognized the coming sun. A warm glow began to creep above the horizon in the distance, although all around her, the world was still covered in the odd blue and purple shadows of the night. He hadn’t much time.
